Montecarotto
From the natural terraces of Montecarotto, one of the most
important fortifications of the Esino Valley, you can admire a wonderful
landscape, that ranges from the Adriatic Sea to the Pre-Apennines mountains.
It is very rich in works of art, which enrich the village's churches.
Height 388 m.
History
It is situated between the Esino and the Misa rivers valleys. Its name
Mons arcis ruptae recalls an ancient fortress, built to
defend a strategically important village, whose ruins testimony its
existence; today, on these ruins rises the collegiate church of Montecarotto.

This fortress is surrounded by a rural agglomerate, which became important
in the XI-XII century. As become a castle, it joined the rural area of Jesi
(XIII century), together with the other important center, Cupramontana.
Although a considerable population decrease has been taking place due to the
abandoning of the fields, Montecarotto, however, has developed and even
qualified the typical vine and wine production.
What to visit

The wonderful Town Walls, built in 1509 according to the plan of the
Architect Albertino di Giacomo from Cremona, is one of the most interesting
fortifications of the Esino Valley. Particularly remarkable is the polygonal
tower with its open gallery and the cylindrical turret.
The Collegiate Church - built at the end of the XVIII century on the
ruins of the Medieval Castle. Inside the church, you can admire the
remarkable and wonderful "Virgin with the Angels" painted by Ramazzani (XVI
century), "Mary Immaculate with the Saints" by Sarti (XVII century) and a
beautiful wooden statue of Christ (XVII century). The church boasts also
extremely precious ornaments and vestments and an organ dating back to the
beginning of the XVIII century. Inside the Crypt of Maria Leonia Baldoni,
there are several relics of saints and martyrs.
The Conventual Church of St. Francis - built in 1612 but consecrated
firstly in 1803. Here you can admire a "Nativity" by Antonio Massi from Jesi
(XVII century) and a bas-relief with the "Adoration of St. Francis".
Other works of art are situated inside the Church of St. Philip (a
wonderful painting of a Madonna with child and an ancient painting (XIX
century) and inside the Church of the Crucifix (remarkable is the
ancient wooden crucifix).

The Communal Theatre - built according to the plan of Raffaele Grilli,
an architect from Jesi, it presents the traditional "horseshoe" structure.
In 1877, it was inaugurated and at present, it is to be restored.
The Mail Art Museum - opened in 1985, it is situated over the
Communal Theatre and was furnished by the architect Paolo Daganello from
Milan. This museum boasts many collection pieces of postal works.
